In the northern part of Botswana, women in the villages of Etsha and Gumare are noted for their skill at crafting baskets from Mokola Palm and local dyes. The baskets are generally woven into three types: large, lidded baskets used for storage, large, open baskets for carrying objects on the head or for winnowing threshed grain, and smaller plates for winnowing pounded grain. The artistry of these baskets is being steadily enhanced through color use and improved designs as they are increasingly produced for commercial use.

Other notable artistic communities include Thamaga Pottery and Oodi Weavers, both located in the southeastern part of Botswana.

The oldest paintings from both Botswana and South Africa depict hunting, animal and human figures, and were made by the Khoisan (!Kung San/Bushmen) over twenty thousand years ago within the Kalahari desert.

In addition to these more traditional arts there are a number of extremely talented artists who use modern means to express themselves. There are a few galleries around Botswana that display paintings and sculptures. Some pieces are inspired by the beautiful Botswana landscapes and others by the people themselves.

Botswana is a parliamentary republic within the Commonwealth. The head of state and head of government is elected president in indirect elections by the National Assembly on the 5-year term. President appoints members of the government.

Legislative power belongs to dwuizbowego parliament. In the higher House, 15 members of the Advisory Board of leaders (House of Chiefs) 8 leaders will sit the most important races, 4 members elected every 5 years and 3 members elected by the other 12 The lower chamber, the National Assembly (National Assembly), consists of 40 members elected by direct universal suffrage for 5-year term.

Botswana’s currency is called Pula, 100 Thebe = 1 Pula. In Setswana pula means “rain” and Thebe means “protection” or “blessing”. The conversion is about 5:1 (U.S. dollars), 6:1 (EUR), 10:1 (GBP) and 1:1,3 (South African Rand)

The politics of Botswana takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Botswana is both head of state and head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government.

Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Parliament of Botswana. Since independence the party system has been dominated by the Botswana Democratic Party. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.

The Batswana people regard this spot as one of the four ‘creation sites’. According to legend, the footprint and rock carvings belonged to Matsieng, who marched out of a hole followed by wild and domestic animals. There is a small information board at the gate and, on the other side of the fence from the car park, a tiny room with some explanations. The site lies at the end of a well-signed 1km-long (0.6mi) 2WD track that starts about 6km (3.7mi) north of Pilane.

Autumn and winter (April through August) are good times to visit Botswana, as the days are generally pleasant and the wildlife never wanders far from water sources. Bear in mind, however, that this is also the time of European, North American and South African school holidays, so things can get a bit crowded. In general, June, early July and mid to late September are the least crowded times to visit. Summer isn’t the best time to hit the back roads, enjoy wildlife viewing or explore the Okavango, as prolonged rains may render sandy roads uncrossable, and animals disperse when water is abundant. From December to March it is very difficult to get around Chobe and Moremi national parks due to heavy rains, and many lodges actually close.

Gaborone (pronounced /ˌxɑːbəˈroʊni/, or spelling pronunciation /ˌɡæbəˈroʊni/), estimated population 208,411 (1 January 2005), is the capital and largest city of Botswana. Gaborone lies in the flat valley between Kgale and Oodi Hills, on the Notwane River in the south eastern corner of Botswana, and 15 kilometers (9 mi) from the South African border. It is the administrative capital of the South-East district.

The Republic of Botswana (Tswana: Lefatshe la Botswana), is a landlocked nation in Southern Africa. Citizens of Botswana are Batswana (singular: Motswana), regardless of ethnicity. Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name after becoming independent within the Commonwealth on September 30, 1966. It is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west, Zambia to the north, and Zimbabwe to the northeast. The economy, closely tied to South Africa’s, is dominated by mining (especially diamonds), tourism, and cattle.
